Helena Matheopoulos was born in Athens, Greece, on Ploutarchou Street, opposite the Church of Saint Nicholas, where she was baptised. English was part of her life from an early age, and her family’s connection with Britain included her grandmother, who was born in England. These early connections helped foster Helena’s longstanding interest in Britain, a country she would later choose for her university education and professional career.
After completing primary school at the Filtsou school in Athens, Helena attended Pierce College. She has recalled the school as an open-minded environment with inspiring Greek and American teachers. Although she was drawn to theatre and initially hoped to study it, she eventually decided to pursue history before embarking on a career in journalism.
Helena has spoken about her decision to move to England independently, arriving in London in 1966 without knowing anyone there. Her recollections of those early years offer a personal perspective on the beginnings of a life that would connect Greek cultural roots with an international career in journalism, opera and the arts.

Medieval history, fashion journalism and the first steps towards a distinguished career in the arts.
Helena Matheopoulos studied Medieval History at University College London (UCL), earning both a BA Honours degree and a Master’s degree. Although she had originally been interested in studying theatre, she chose history as the first step towards her ambition to become a journalist.
Her first professional position was at House & Garden, where she gained experience in publishing before moving into fashion journalism. She subsequently joined Vogue and became Fashion and Travel Editor at Tatler, where she worked for three and a half years. Her work took her to destinations including Taiwan, India, Morocco and Tunisia, broadening her professional experience and bringing her into contact with international creative circles.
She later became Fashion Editor at The Daily Express. In 1974, she arranged interviews with leading Parisian designers and secured early access to photograph key looks from their collections before their official press presentations. The resulting feature was published ahead of the formal presentations and received recognition at the end of the year. This period established her reputation in fashion journalism before she turned increasingly towards her enduring interest in music, theatre and opera.
After several years in fashion journalism, Helena Matheopoulos decided to devote more of her professional life to her interest in the arts, particularly music and opera. She joined Evening News, where she developed a regular Friday column featuring extended interviews with prominent artists and personalities. Her first interview for the newspaper was with actor Richard Harris.
Her work subsequently appeared in a range of British and international publications, including The Sunday Times, The Times, Gramophone, Opera Now and the Greek newspaper To Vima. She also became International Editor-at-Large of Greek Vogue, a role she held from 2001 until the magazine ceased publication in 2013.
Throughout her career, Helena has interviewed leading figures from the world of opera and classical music. One particularly significant encounter was her interview with conductor Herbert von Karajan, which she later identified as the most important interview of her career. Her approach to interviewing, as she has explained publicly, has been guided by a commitment to exploring her subjects in depth without using her writing to hurt or ridicule them.
In-depth interviews and cultural journalism exploring opera, its performers and the wider arts.
A body of published work spanning opera, celebrated singers, conductors and influential cultural figures.
Helena Matheopoulos established a distinctive place in opera writing through books built around detailed conversations with leading performers and conductors. Her first book, Maestro: Encounters with Conductors of Today, emerged from her interviews with prominent conductors, including Zubin Mehta, and was published in 1982 in the United Kingdom and 1983 in the United States. It was named Music Book of the Year by Stereo Review in 1983.
She continued with Bravo: Today’s Tenors, Baritones and Basses Discuss Their Roles, followed by Diva: Today’s Sopranos and Mezzos Discuss Their Art and its sequel, Diva: The New Generation. Her other publications include Fashion Designers at the Opera and Plácido Domingo: My Operatic Roles. She also wrote a biography of Juan Carlos I of Spain in collaboration with the King.
Alongside her writing, Helena has contributed to the work of major cultural organisations. She served as Artistic Advisor and British representative of the Athens Concert Hall (Megaron) from 1991 to 1995, and later as Special Consultant for Vocal Projects at the Philharmonia Orchestra from 1996 to 2004. Her wider cultural work has included public lectures on opera at literary festivals, opera institutions and arts organisations internationally.
Through her books, journalism and cultural engagements, Helena Matheopoulos has built a career dedicated to documenting the lives, artistry and achievements of figures who have shaped opera and the performing arts.
Beyond the world of opera, journalism and literature, cats hold a special place in Helena Matheopoulos’s life. Their independent nature, distinctive personalities and quiet companionship offer a welcome contrast to the demands of a career spent documenting the lives and achievements of celebrated artists.
At home in London, these feline companions are part of the everyday world behind the books, interviews and cultural engagements. This more personal aspect of Helena’s life offers a glimpse of the individual beyond the public figure, revealing another source of warmth and pleasure away from the stage and the written page.
